Pets and Halloween
Trick or treat. Ghosts and goblins. Yup, it’s time for Halloween!!!
A favorite holiday for kids (and kids at heart). While this is a
fun holiday, your pet is depending on you to keep him safe and sound.
Here are some guidelines to help protect your pet:
Keep your pet inside on Halloween!! It is unfortunate
but true that there are people who may tease, hurt or even steal
your pet. If you have a black cat, it is recommended that you keep
him inside for the week or two prior to October 31st as well.
- If possible, try to keep your pet in a separate room when
you are expecting trick or treaters. Many pets may become upset
at strangers knocking at the door…especially ones in costumes!!
If he is in a room by himself (or with his sisters/brothers) with
some soft music playing and some food and water, he is likely to
be calmer and less stressed. In addition, keeping your pet confined
in a room with the door shut will help keep him safe and prevent
him from escaping.
- If you dress your pet in a costume, be sure it fits properly
and does not impair his vision. Never leave a costume on your pet
while he is unattended.
- DO NOT FEED YOUR PET ANY CANDY!! If you want to give your
pet a “Halloween Treat”, make sure it is one properly
prepared for him. Chocolate can be toxic to pets. Candy wrappers
are dangerous, toxic and can cause blockages. Candy/Caramel apple
sticks can become stuck in his throat. Keep the candy and it’s
wrappers away from your pet’s reach.
- Be aware of the possible dangers that your spooky decorations
may pose. Candles and Jack-O-Lanterns can be knocked over by and
excited tail. Other decorations can fall down upon your pet or even
end up in their curious mouths.
By following these simple guidelines and using common sense, your
pet will enjoy Halloween as much as you and your family!! Have a
spook-tacular holiday!
