Disaster Preparedness for your Pet
Disasters and evacuations are not things we like to dwell on. Unfortunately,
they do happen. In response to this, the Humane Society of the United
States (HSUS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have designated
June as National Disaster Preparedness Month. Many of us have thought
out a plan as to how we will protect ourselves and/or where we will
go in the event of a disaster or evacuation. It is important to
consider your pets in this plan as well.
The following is a checklist of items and information you should
have readily available in the event of an emergency. This is a checklist
recommended by the HSUS.
A current photo of your pet in case you become separated.
- Food, water and dishes.
- Medications and current medical records with your veterinarian’s
name, phone number and address.
- Tags on your pet with both your name and your pet’s
name, and an emergency phone number.
- Information on feeding (amounts and times) and any medical
or behavioral conditions all written out.
- A first aid kit.
- A list of homes or boarding facilities that your pet can
stay at if you are unable to bring him with you. (Note most shelters
will not let you bring your pet!)
- A collar, leash and/or kennel to transport your pet.
- Your pet’s bed and/or toys to help reduce stress.
If you take the time to plan ahead and have everything you need
ready, both you and your pet will feel a bit better in an emergency.
